Choosing the right bathroom extractor

Feb 27, 2020
Things to consider when choosing a bathroom fan
The three main types of bathroom extractor fans are; Axial, centrifugal and inline.

Axial fans are fitted to most bathrooms in the UK. They can vent no more than 2-3m and are ideally mounted on an outside wall. These fans are not the most powerful, but are more than adequate for most sized bathrooms. Their price range is around £15-£90

Centrifugal fans are used to vent bathrooms quicker or to duct the air more than a couple of metres and are more powerful. These are perfect for larger areas, but are also nosier. Their price range is around £50-£130

Inline fans can be used to vent multiple rooms through a ducting system. They are also very quiet and more than powerful enough to handle any bathroom size. They can be installed into lofts, ceiling and voids making them inconspicuous and can vent over 50m.
Their price range is around £100-£400

Choice of power supply mains or low voltage will depend on where you are installing the fan. If you are placing a fan within zone 1 or 2 of the bathroom you have to install a low voltage fan, outside of this area is fine for main supply.

Something that is over looked is noise level. If you want a quiet fan look for something which has a dB level less than 32. Fans operating above 42 dB are considered noisy.

The extraction rate for bathrooms set down by building regs is a min of 15 litres per second and for toilets 6 litres. These figures are set as a minimum and we would recommend going for between 20 -25 litres in the bathroom or showroom and 15 in toilets.

Exterior Grille come in two types fixed or gravity. A gravity grille is best as it stops back-draughts, but are not recommended if your fan is of low power as it will push the vents open. They can also make a cutting noise at night which can be heard if vent is too close to a bedroom window.
